What Could You Share?

The library where I work has been showcasing self-published and small, independently-published books. You won’t find them in our online catalog, but you can browse them and check them out in person. Many authors just want to be read. Others want to find their audience and a following. Some may have spent thousands of dollars to get a book published, only to find that no one buys it. Marketing? That’s extra. Errors? You approved it. Publishing a book and getting it distributed has never been easier, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still a lot of work. The competition is stiff – and worldwide.

Our library has a monthly program to foster a community that supports the efforts of new, struggling, and hopeful authors. It hasn’t been too well attended. Readers and writers can find answers for themselves. Direct answers from an AI search tool, without wasting time leaving the house in 110 degree heat! And much of what the library has to offer is now online – courses taught, certificates offered, no guarantees – but, hey, it’s free.

In the end, how do you measure success? What are your goals? I am particularly interested in helping people tell their stories. Often in our meetings at the library I tell my story. The joy of putting together beautiful books with authors. Every one different and original. Learning how to use new programs, exercising my brain. It isn’t easy. I’m not an expert. But it’s rewarding. And that’s what I can share. What could you share? Reading local authors? Writing reviews? Connecting with others? Do it!
